February 2017 Final PKS Sea Turtle Nest of 2016 By Peggy Deneau On December 31, the 2016 sea turtle season in Pine Knoll Shores finally came to an end when the green sea turtle nest that had been laid back on September 22 was finally opened. We learned that the longest a green turtle nest has incubated before hatching successfully was 100 days—and December 31 was day 100 on our nest. At 4 p.m. on the 31st, Louie Schrum and Jan CorseUo dug the eggs out of the nest, with Lisa Park on hand to perform the inventory. One hundred twenty-six eggs had been laid, but none had hatched. The eggs were all clean and white. None were dark or discolored, but all were dead. Dr. Matthew Godfrey, head sea turtle biologist for North Carolina, was at the excavation. He opened several eggs from the top, center and bottom of the nest. The . contents were the same: embryonic green turtles about one and one-half inches long were in all the eggs. It looked as though the entire nest got too cold all at once, arresting development of all the hatchlings. It was sad, as this was the only green turtle nest laid on Bogue Banks in 2016. Also, DNA taken from an egg when the nest was discovered showed that the mother turtle was new. She had not nested here before, and there were no records on her. On the bright side, we did have 15 sea turtle nests in Pine Knoll Shores in 2016. This is just the second time in 16 years we have had that many. Last years season set a record: 1,178 loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings made it safely into the ocean from Pine Knoll Shores beaches. We are all looking forward to the 2017 sea turtle season, which begins in May. Many new people have expressed an interest in joining our group, and we should have plenty of volunteers this year. Thanks go out to all the wonderful people who have made the Pine Knoll Shores Sea Turtle Program so successful. Also, thanks go to Police Chief Ryan Thompson for the use of the Turtle Rescue beach vehicle, and to the Town of Pine Knoll Shores for support of this program.
